Here’s where we are going to outline and track our progress throughout treatment. We expect that information here will change and grow as time goes on.
Treatment for ALL in little boys like Cristian typically lasts 3 years from the diagnosis date. This time period will obviously fluctuate a small amount based on how Cristian progresses in his recovery, but we are expecting to be complete by February 2024.
There are 3 phases to treatment that we will be going through:
- Induction (Remission) – Initial 4 weeks of intense treatment with the goal of having no detectable amounts of Leukemia in his system at the end of 28 days.
- 2x daily steroids and antacid
- 4x doses of antibiotics on weekends to prevent pneumonia
- Weekly chemo
- At least 3 spinal taps to measure progress towards remission
- If at any point during the first 28 days Cristian has a temperature of 100.4 or higher then he will be hospitalized for the remainder of the remission period
- Consolidation – now that there is no longer any detectable levels of leukemia in his Cristian’s body we will move to maintenance treatments to tackle any remaining cells in the body. This period will last for 6-8 months after achieving remission
- Weekly chemo (higher doses than induction phase)
- 4x doses of antibiotics on weekends to prevent pneumonia
- Spinal taps to confirm no relapse
- Maintenance – this phase is intended to ensure that if any leukemia cells have managed to survive in the body that they are unable to gain a foothold and lead to relapse. This period typically lasts 2 years
- Monthly chemo (lower doses that induction)
- 4x doses of antibiotics on weekends to prevent pneumonia
- Spinal taps to confirm no relapse
With all of the treatments listed above we will be working to give his body every advantage to recover and heal naturally. We will coordinate our efforts with the doctors, but are not limiting ourselves to just the above recovery measures.
We have been directed to not give certain vitamins during the treatment process as they could delay his recovery. Specifically we will be avoiding these items:
- Multivitamins
- Folate
- B12
- Vitamin A
